We want our space to continue being utilized for outdoor entertainment as an accent to good times, makers markets, cultural festivals, fundraisers et al!!
In September, Santa Cruz showed up strong—over 150 people attended out first hearing, and the planning commission unanimously approved our events space. But 10 days after, local window installer Guy Mitchell and realtor Stacey Mitchell filed an appeal, claiming that our brewery and community events will lower their property value (🤷🏿in the distant future🤷🏽♂️) in this commercial area adjacent to ACTIVE train tracks. Their appeal is riddled with false information aimed to defame us, stating that we do nothing for the community and do not support local music and art and just over-serve alcoholics… We’ll post a link to read it for yourselves soon.
📝Here is a DIRECT QUOTE from Guy and Stacey Mitchell: “We were disappointed to watch what appeared to be a popularity contest as patrons got up one after the other to explain how the bar is their home, community, safe place and an inclusive space. We wondered, where in Santa Cruz is there a NON-inclusive space? Everyone is welcome everywhere in Santa Cruz. It was clear Woodhouse drove customers to the meeting using social media; one person even went to an extreme by forcing a young child to awkwardly get up and say something into the microphone. It was painful to watch.”
-Guy and Stacey Mitchell
Aside from this being wildly insensitive, it is inaccurate,
And their appeal overlooks key FACTS: both of our properties are situated next to active train tracks with 140-decibel horns blowing to clear Potrero and all the way through highway 1. As professionals in their fields, they know that future construction would require substantial noise mitigation and building materials that can handle that aural environment. What’s more, businesses like ours only boost the area’s value, bringing in visitors, supporting other local enterprises, and giving our community a place to gather, eat, drink, and connect.
‼️ This appeal isn’t based on valid concerns—it’s about stopping a space that brings joy, culture, and connection to Santa Cruz. Please join us in showing the City Council what true community support looks like. We can’t do this without you!
