Papiba & Friends
Apr

7:00 PM19:00

Papiba & Friends

There are bands that play music, and then there are bands that create an experience—Papiba & Friends belong firmly in the latter category. Steeped in the vibrant traditions of Brazilian music yet effortlessly transcending genre, this Santa Cruz-based ensemble electrifies audiences with a fusion of samba, reggae, funk, and soul, delivering performances that feel less like concerts and more like collective celebrations of rhythm and movement.

At the helm of this sonic force is Papiba Godinho, a master musician whose artistry is woven with the infectious pulse of Brazilian beats. Born and raised in Brazil, Papiba carries an intrinsic understanding of his homeland’s musical heritage, yet he channels it through a contemporary, genre-blending lens that is both innovative and deeply authentic. Whether through the syncopated drive of samba, the hypnotic sway of reggae, or the exuberant groove of funk-infused rhythms, his compositions are irresistibly kinetic—music designed to move both body and spirit.

Alongside him, Etienne Franc and Gary Kehoe form a rhythm section of unparalleled cohesion. Franc’s basslines are fluid and dynamic, acting as the heartbeat that anchors each song, while Kehoe’s drumming is a masterclass in precision and feel, driving the band’s energy with unrelenting finesse. Together, they construct a foundation upon which melodies soar, harmonies intertwine, and audiences lose themselves in the joyous pulse of the music.

But what truly sets Papiba & Friends apart is their ability to transform any venue into an immersive, euphoric atmosphere. Whether playing an intimate gathering or commanding the stage at a large festival, they create a communal space where music isn’t just heard—it’s felt, danced to, and lived in. Their performances are magnetic, their chemistry undeniable, and their ability to connect with audiences unparalleled.

In a music scene saturated with fleeting trends and formulaic sounds, Papiba & Friends stand as a testament to the enduring power of organic, soulful musicianship. They are not merely performers; they are ambassadors of joy, architects of groove, and custodians of a musical legacy that bridges continents and cultures. Their music pulses with life, and their presence on stage is nothing short of hypnotic. If you haven’t experienced the spellbinding allure of Papiba & Friends, you haven’t yet tapped into the true rhythm of Santa Cruz.

Rory Lynch: Santa Cruz's Eclectic Singer-Songwriter!

Rory Lynch plays new music for old souls. His unique style tiptoes on the lines between pop, folk, country, and jazz. In recent years his music has shifted to encompass multiple genres such as R&B, Neosoul, Bossa Nova, Funk, and even some Hip Hop. His voice is a blend of crooner, country, and soul that flourishes within his uniquely fashioned style of retro Americana. He is mighty mean whistler as well. His band is comprised of handpicked talent that spurs each song into different territory. You will never hear a song played the same way twice. They allow for improvisation and tangential shifts of rhythm and melody that push each song to new heights. Put a Rory Lynch show on your bucket list. He never fails. Originally hailing from Philadelphia, this itinerant troubadour calls the central Californian coast home. He can be found singing and playing in wineries, dive bars, house parties, your local venue or just on the street. Always playing his new music for the old souls out there.

His sophomore full length album ‘Here In America’ is set to be released May 2025. He will be dropping singles ahead of the release date starting January 2025. Stay tuned.

Anyone in town interested in traditional Brazilian dance music has certainly checked out SambaDá, the seven-piece local band that does it amazingly well. It was founded by Papiba Godinho two decades ago, just a couple of years after he moved here from Brazil.

But Godinho has another project he started a few years ago called Papiba and Friends with bassist Etienne Franc and drummer Gary Kehoe, which certainly has Brazilian elements, but veers from the traditional.

“There is more space for the experimental elements of the music. We do a lot more blending of R&B, rock, blues and Northern Americana influences. I think this makes Brazilian music more accessible to our American audiences and opens them to exploring more deeply,” Godinho says.

Description

After a year-long battle of not one but two complaints brought by neighbors to city hall against Woodhouse Brewery’s outdoor event space, dancers and music lovers throughout Santa Cruz can rejoice, thanks to the overwhelming support of the local community who showed up to support the brewery. The Santa Cruz City Council unanimously denied the latest appeal, keeping the door open for Woodhouse to throw events like this weekend’s Outernational Dance party. Deejayed by Selecta 7 and some special guests, the party features the hottest, irie-est in reggae, dancehall, dub and rocksteady. What’s more Santa Cruz than reggae during the holidays? After all, the Christmas colors are two-thirds of the Rasta flag. -Mat Weir, Good Times Santa Cruz.

Dan & Laurel Quartet

Dan Frechette is a musical force; As anyone who has ever met him can attest, he is a living, breathing folk festival who's songwriting has been appreciated by the likes of Bob Dylan, Tim O'Brien, Doc Watson, and David Bowie. Raised in the small town of Pinawa, Manitoba, where the vast prairies meet the Canadian shield, Dan took an early obsession with music to the extreme, garnering the attention of major publishing which signed him a deal when he was just 17. To date he has recorded over 100 solo albums to date, learned to play 15 instruments across multiple genres, and has written lyrics and music to well over 1600 original songs.

For over 25 years the award winning Canadian songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and educator has performed major folk festivals and traveled throughout North America and Europe, sharing his songs and ebullient personality, and warming stages with the likes of Dar Williams, Richard Thompson, and Ron Sexsmith.

Dan's signature guitar playing style is a beaming nod to the the great guitar masters: Pete Townshend, Norman Blake and Doc Watson. Dan Frechette is equally at home in the spotlight as he is as a session and backup player, able to change styles to suit an audience or recording situation at the drop of a tip in his hat.

Kelly Koval w/Bad Tiger and Gable

Kelly Koval:

Following the sudden death of her Mom in 2019, Kelly Koval coaxed out songs in the solitude of Shut Down that would soon become her debut solo album, Wake. These songs, both coarse and tender, unrelentingly shine a light on the grief and gratitude that thrives in the aftermath of loss. Described as alternative folk, Kelly's music is highlighted by her emotive vocals and ruminating lyrics that search for clarity in the chaos. Her long awaited album marks a new era in her collaborative music career that will give listeners nostalgic reminders of the impact and expansiveness of unending love.

Bad Tiger:

Originally formed in 2018, Bad Tiger is a Bay Area-based music project.

"There’s an irresistible charm about San Francisco’s Bad Tiger and her candid, no-holds-barred brand of indie pop" - Atwood Magazine “Bad Tiger have carved themselves an honest and vulnerable corner, playing sweet indie pop that is both upbeat and frank.” - HighClouds Magazine

Gable:

In the realm of melody, a luminary presence emerges—an enchantress whose voice, akin to whispered secrets, captivates the soul. With hues of melancholy and moments of ethereal clarity, she crafts sonic landscapes that stir the heart. A lyricist of profound depth, she also pays homage to the great musicians, weaving their legacies into her own tapestry of sound. Through her covers, she breathes new life into timeless classics, honoring the past while embracing the present.
